River Market Brewery is Closed

River Market Brewery has ceased operations. I think we can blame this one on subpar service and product (though I predicted the smoking ban would kill it). It was a truly bad place for the past couple of years, but was good for a period early this century.

Next up for the space? I don't know, but I've heard whispers of a little brewery named Schlafly.

  1. Interesting.

Half of me is excited, half of me is pissed...

  2. That place was definitely terrible, a waste of a classic building and a great location. It makes so much sense for KC Hopps to buy it and make it another 75th Street Brewery - they would make a killing there at lunch and it could become a great night spot too.

  3. It was only a matter of time, just like everyone else has said, the place was terrible. I think everyone is amazed it lasted as long as it did.

  4. That doesn't surprise me either. I only went there a couple times, but it was always dead. Can't wait to see what goes in next!

  5. When I first moved to KC in 1996, RMB was excellent. Then it was mediocre. Then it was bad. The last time I ate there I had a flat beer, a pre-pattied hamburger that was like it came from Sam's club and my wife had a still partly frozen chicken sandwich.

I SOOO hope you are right about Schlafley -- that would be a dream come true.

  6. It's a great location, but the bar/restaurant needs to be renovated. I always felt it as 1985 when I walked in there. Hopefully Schlafy will remake it all new, and get rid of everything about its crappy past.

  7. My vibe is nothing is going in there in this economy. In ten months though when things start roaring back, I think that'll be different.

  9. Another one who is not suprised. I've said this about the Power Plant brewery that went down, I think Boulevard needs to get a tap room going. Hell put only wings in the place or just a few items on the menu. I'm not looking for a restaurant, I'm looking for good beer. I wouldn't mind if Schlafly came in, but I do think Boulevard should jump in the game. What's that old Brewery in Westport that kept closing down? There's plenty of spots in KC if you're a small time brewer. Maybe Dead Canary can eventually move in. Have you heard of DCB yet?

  10. KC Hopps USED to own the River Market Brewery in the 90's - it was part of the family. I hope it continues to be a brewery, no matter who owns it.
