Short Pours - Week of 4/6
Something tells me this Monday may be one of the least
productive days of the year in Kansas City. If you don’t have tickets to the Royals home opener, you’re
probably putting the final touches on that excuse to lay onto your boss to get
out of work early and go watch the game. If you’re boss doesn’t happen to buy it though, there’s
still plenty of beer events to look forward to this week.
Last week brought the debut of a new brewery to the Kansas
City area. Pretty Things Beer and Ale Project, based in Somerville, MA, starting hitting shelves here and to
celebrate the arrival of Pretty Things, Flying Saucer will be hosting a launch
party Monday April 6th starting at 7:00pm. Flying Saucer will be tapping the following beers from
Pretty Things:
Jack D’Or - Saison
Baby Tree - Quadruple
St. Botolph’s Town – Yorkshire dark brown ale
Lovely Saint Winefride – “Brown” lager
Fluffy White Rabbits – Triple
A couple years ago while vacationing in the Northeast, I was
able to try some beers from Pretty Things and they were outstanding. This is an exciting brewery to have
available in the Kansas City area and definitely worth seeking out their beers.
Founders KBS Tappings
A couple weeks ago I highlighted the upcoming release of
Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout.
Last week saw the beer come and, for the most part, go in bottles but if you happened to miss out you’ll have some chances to try some this week. Bier Station, Martin City Brewing and
Waldo Pizza will all be tapping kegs of KBS this week.
Details are below:
Bier Station -
Monday April 6th 5:00pm – KBS will be available and served in 4-ounce
pours, one per person. In addition
to KBS, Bier Station will also have Mosaic Promise, a rare, single hop IPA from
Founders available along with Breakfast Stout, Centennial IPA, Blushing Monk
and Rubaeus.
Martin City Brewing
– Tuesday April 7th 6:00pm – KBS will be the featured beer as part
of Martin City’s 2Rare 2sdays. KBS
will be tapped at 6:00pm and limited to one 5-ounce pour per person. Martin City will also have Rubaeus,
Breakfast Stout, Dirty Bastard, Centennial IPA and All Day IPA on tap and
available all day.
Waldo Pizza –
Wednesday April 8th 5:00pm – Waldo Pizza gets in on the KBS fun with
a Founders Tap Takeover that will include, KBS, Blushing Monk, Backwoods
Bastard and Big Lushious.
When Boulevard Brewing Co. released their 2015 release schedule there
was a lot on there to look forward to this year. In my opinion one of the most exciting details unveiled in
the schedule was that Boulevard was going to release four variants of their
Imperial Stout beer throughout this year.
Back in February, we saw the first release of the series as Imperial
Stout X – Coffee Stout hit the market.
Last week, Boulevard announced the second installment, Imperial Stout X
– Aztec Chocolate.
Boulevard’s Ambassador Brewer, Jeremy Danner, describes the
process of creating this variation as, “a batch of Imperial Stout was brewed that
received freshly ground cinnamon during the boil on the brewhouse. This batch
will be blended with tanks of Imperial Stout that are infused with dried pasilla
negro and ancho chiles as well as cacao nibs. The chiles and cacao nibs were
stuffed into porous bags and suspended in sanitized stainless steel tanks.
Finished beer is transferred onto the chiles and nibs and allowed to rest for
24 hours of contact time. Following the infusion, the beer is transferred to a
blending tank and blended with the cinnamon spiced batch.”
Boulevard is currently looking at a June release for Imperial
Stout X – Aztec Chocolate. We’ll
have more details on this release as it gets closer.
