Short Pours - 6/20/13

Barley's Leawood opens Friday

The newest Barley's Brewhaus location, at 5031 W. 135th Street, will have its grand opening tomorrow. Thanks to the Facebook page for the new bar and restaurant, we've seen a number of photos detailing progress, and the space looks like it should be very cool. Plus, there will be 62 taps, so you certainly can't complain about that. If you live out that way and need another bar option besides the Cougar Den that is Nick and Jake's, Barley's might be the place for you. If you stop in and check it out this weekend, report back here and let everyone know how it is!

City council voting on microbrew law

Midtown KC Post published an interesting article today that outlines a city council decision that could have a major positive impact on the future of microbreweries in Kansas City. The measure being considered would allow microbreweries to sell their beer at the manufacturing site without needing a tavern license (which are not always available or are often capped). The catch? Brewers would also have to make at least 200 gallons/year of wine or cider in order to do so. The article makes a reference to the in-progress brewery Kansas City Bier Company, which has been a bit of a mystery, as they've kept relatively quiet about their development. Definitely looking forward to seeing what the council decides.

Left Hand Beer School at Barley's OP

Though the Beer School events at Barley's can be pretty hit and miss, they announced their July 1st class today and it could be a good one to attend. Left Hand is diving into the cellar to bring a nice lineup of beers to the Overland Park location. Included will be Ambidextrous Step 4 (Maibock), 2009 St. Vrain Tripel, 2013 St. Vrain Tripel, 2010 Chainsaw Double ESB, and Milk Stout Nitro. For only $12, that's an excellent set of beers to sample, especially compared to some of the yawners that other breweries have brought to Beer School in the past. Ticket's can be purchased at the Barley's in Overland Park.

Real Ale Fest cask list and Groupon

The first annual KC Real Ale Fest is coming up this Saturday in Lee's Summit, and I've obtained the nearly full list (waiting to hear what Mother's is bringing) of casks that will be tapped. Expect to see:

Empyrean Watchman IPA with Mango and Lemon
Empyrean Darkside Vanilla Porter with Bourbon and Cacao Nibs
Green Flash West Coast IPA
Green Flash Hop Odyssey Citra Session IPA
Mother's TBD
Perennial Aria dry hopped with Citra and Amarillo
Perennial Aria with White Peaches
Southern Tier 2xIPA
Southern Tier 2xSteam
Summit Oatmeal Stout
Summit Saga IPA
Tallgrass 8 Bit with Peaches and Cream
Tallgrass 8 Bit with Strawberry and Cream

Of course, in addition to these, breweries at the festival will also be pouring samples of various other bottled beers from their lineups.

PLUS, you can now get tickets to the festival for an incredible price. There is a Groupon deal that will get you 2 GA tickets for only $15 total (a $30 value). And if that wasn't enough, I'll be there in the afternoon pouring for Green Flash, so go grab a couple tickets and come harass me.
