Hoppin' Frog

Those in the know know that Hoppin' Frog brews are now available in Kansas. I was very pleased when JJSKCK presented B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher Oatmeal Imperial Stout as his offering for our little tasting party. I'd heard good things about Hoppin' Frog's stouts and B.O.R.I.S. is a gold medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival so it should be good.

We poured it second, after Dark Truth. I thought it best to drink it before we got a little too cloudy from drinking. It poured out like a bottle of Valvoline and Yeti exclaimed "this smells like a bag of ass" and while I've never actually smelled a bag of ass, if I were to use my imagination, I think a bag of ass might compare favorably to the smell of B.O.R.I.S. Lucky for us, it tasted amazing with a little fruity sweetness mixed with a little chocolate and coffee. A slight alcohol warmth and some hoppiness was on the finish. Everything was nice and balanced and just wonderful.

The 22 oz. bottle of B.O.R.I.S. was about $10 and should be available year round. This is a wonderful addition to the KC beer scene and I think can be thrown into the equation of best stout available in KC with Great Divide Yeti and Old Rasputin. Factoring in that it's somewhat expensive B.O.R.I.S. will more than likely be a special occasion beer, but if it is, you're probably going to be declaring a lot more occasions special.

  1. I think Peche Mortal would have to be included in any discussion of best Imperial Stout available in KC.

  2. I just saw some of the Hopping Frog brews this afternoon and picked up a bomber of their DIPA. Hope it's good. On a side note, I made the trek to Tipsy's this afternoon and was seriously underwhelmed. I hadn't intended on going, but came up empty after hitting three other good beer stores I frequent down south in search of Modus Hoperandi (your review got me very interested). So I headed up your way in hopes they still had some. The two employees there didn't speak a word to me the 15 minutes I was in there browsing, and even when I got rung up the woman was abrupt. Oh well, you speak so highly, I was hoping for better. I did grab two sixers of the elusive Modus, so not all was lost. Drinking one now and really enjoying it. The hunt made the reward all that sweeter!

  3. Jeff, I'm shocked that your Tipsy's experience was bad. I'm sorry if you made a trip just because of what I wrote, but your experience is definitely not the norm for the store. I'm always greeted and am usually helped quickly when I stand in front of the beer coolers for any longer than a couple of minutes.

Glad you like the Modus Hoperandi.

  4. I'm sure it was an isolated incident, as I know how much you pride good service and that you give them your business. They are on the opposite of the city for me, so I would only venture to find things you recommend that don't turn up closer to me. (like the quite good Modus)

  5. The last few times I have gone into Tipsy's, I have had similar experiences to Bull's. If I am in front of the coolers for more than a few minutes, someone always offers to help me. I'm glad you haven't written it off completely.
