Hoptimum

I was surprised yesterday afternoon on my Gnarly Wine quest to find Sierra Nevada's newest limited release beer, Hoptimum sitting around at my liquor store of choice, Tipsy's. After I grabbed my bottle, Tipsy's had 2 left. I wouldn't expect those 2 bottles to still be on the shelf today. On Tap KC only has it listed at 2 other stores right now, Gomer's South (which has a 1 bottle maximum per person) and Lukas in OP. My guess is every other store in town will be getting theirs.

Hoptimum is Sierra Nevada's Imperial IPA
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor. Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas.

Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.
It was all I could do to not open my bottle last night after I finished the Gnarly Wine, but the 10.4% ABV would have been too much. I'm looking forward to drinking it tonight so I can decide whether I want to spend another $8 and the time finding it to get another bottle.

  1. I had been on the hunt for this one since I read about it on Sierra Nevada's site in December. Their Pale Ale turned me on to craft brewing when I was in college over 15 years ago, so I have a soft spot for this brewery. A rep from Glazer's has been very helpful in letting me know when Hoptimum would land in our area. I was able to find several bottles at OP Lukas, but the Martin City store only had a single bottle left. The Glazer's rep said that it showed up in warehouse inventory, so it may be more widely available by the weekend.

I was dying to try it last night, but I got home a little too late for such a big beer. Can't wait to get into it tonight!

  2. Good not great. I would rather buy 2 of the harvest series for the price.

  4. FWIW, the guy at Tipsy's said the state of Kansas only got 6 cases of Hoptimum.

  5. Cellars in Roseville MN, where I happened to be the other day, must have gotten six cases themselves.

I liked it a lot, but not any better than Hopslam which is easier to get and Double Trouble which is much easier to get and both currently available. If you have a MO address Pliny the Elder and Sculpin are also easier to get.

  6. I was not greatly impressed: Sierra hasn't created the ideal IPA yet, but they sure keep trying. I do enjoy visiting their brewpub in Chico. I still prefer O'Dell IPA, Ska Modus Hoperandi and an occasional Singlewide on tap down at the local pub.
