Mother's Brewing Company Coming to KC

Its official, Springfield's own Mother's Brewing Company will start sending beer to Kansas City next month.  Mother's is a new brewery that just recently began packaging its beer and they are planning on introducing their beers to the Kansas City market at Hopfest on May 19th.  Kegs should begin arriving shortly after that with packaged beer scheduled for mid July.  The year-round lineup is currently three beers strong: Three Blind Mice Brown Beer, Lil' Helper IPA, and Tow Head American Blonde.

They do make seasonal beers and it sounds like soon we will be getting their Summer seasonal, Sandy, a hoppy wheat beer that clocks in at 33 IBUs.  But that's not all.  The Mother's Others collection of limited release beers is KC bound as well.  This series comes in 4pks and includes beers like Foggy Notion Barleywine and Trouble Maker Double IPA.  Every few months we should have access to a different beer from this rotating series.  Mother's does have a barrel program and they experiment with different firkins at their brewery.  As Kansas City gets to know Mother's a little better, we should expect to get a shot at these specialties as well.

I don't know about you guys, but I find this all very exciting.  Not only do we have access to a new local brewery, but they seem to be making some pretty cool beers and excellent YouTube videos.  I have only tried their IPA and that was over six months ago, but I do remember enjoying it.  What do you guys think?  Have any of you tried their beers?  Visited the brewery?  Let us know what you think.

Here's some info from the brewery on its year-round beers:

Three Blind Mice Brown Beer
5.5% ABV, 24 IBUs

Three Blind Mice is inspired by our favorite qualities from English brown ales, German altbiers, and Irish reds. Mother’s trio of beer connoisseurs sipped away many a night, working to find this ideal combination. Mother’s beautiful brown beer is medium-bodied with caramel, toffee, and subtle chocolate malt flavors—all balanced by moderate hop notes and a clean, dry finish.

Three Blind Mice combines components of several malty beers for the unique brown beer experience you’ve been missing. After lots of research to find the perfect styles for our base, the clear winners were the lighter body and caramel characters of Irish red ales, the soft chocolate and toffee flavors from English brown ales, and the hop component and balance of German altbiers. We used traditional elements from each beer style and added our own touch for one incredible brown beer.

Lil' Helper India Pale Ale7% ABV, 70 IBUs
You’re in for a helluva burly bite with this one. Mother’s India Pale Ale is aggressively hopped in both the wort kettle and aging vessel for a sharp, clean bitterness and fragrant citrus hop flavors. We’ve instilled a mellow malt character as the backbone to balance the elevated alcohol and hop levels IPA lovers crave. Whether you’re an IPA loyalist or just sampling, you’ve found yourself a great beer. So spend some quality time with Mother’s Lil’ Helper.

Tow Head American Blonde
5.2% ABV, 21 IBUs

Marrying the best elements of traditional German golden ales and classic Midwestern wheats, this American Blonde lives up to Mother’s expectations. Towhead is refreshingly light-bodied with flavor that won’t quit. It starts slightly sweet with hints of fruit and finishes with the faintest hop kiss that’ll leave you reaching for another. And another.

Towhead is Mother’s little blonde baby. We’ve captured a subtle blend of sweet, fruity flavors—well suited for close examination yet balanced enough to go down smooth, clean, and crisp when you just want something cold and tasty.

  1. I've had Tow Head and Three Blind Mice from the regular lineup. I dug Tow Head, I'm not too crazy about "brown ales" in general, thus I wasn't a huge fan of 3BM. That said, their Winter Grind seasonal is an amazing beverage. It's the stout that finally turned my Miller drinking father into a stout drinker.

  2. Being from Springfield, I can testify that you are in for a real treat. Fun beer comes from the fun atmosphere at Mother's. I was there this morning and walked away with a six pack of Sandy, not available in stores quite yet:) You will be most impressed with our beer project down here and I am glad it is KC that gets to share it with us!

  3. I picked up a 6 of 3 Blind Mice in a C-store last fall at the recommendation of a work collegue. I'm not the biggest fan of Brown Ales in general, but found the 3BM to be a very good version of a Brown. Am excited to try others as the store only carried 3BM and the Tow Head - am happy to hear that an IPA is part of their regular rotation.

  4. Picked up some lil' helper today while I was in Springfield. The first one went down really quickly. I would recommend picking some up when it gets to KC.

  5. I live in Springfield, in fact I sell beer in Springfield. Mother's is very popular here. I have also met and volunteered at the brewery, great people and a great set up with a lot of potential to make a lot of good beer. Once Kansas City gets Mother's, Perennial and 2nd Shift we can all start acting like a family again! haha
