Torn Label Brewing Co Launch Week

We’re only a few days into 2015 and I already have a feeling this is going to be a very exciting year for the Kansas City craft beer scene.  Hopefully you didn’t over imbibe too much during the holidays because Torn Label Brewing Co. is kicking off the New Year with a week of events that you will not want to miss.

If you are not familiar with Torn Label Brewing Co. yet, they are a production based brewery located on the south side of the Studios Inc. building at 1708 Campbell Street in the Crossroads. It is operated by Kansas City natives, Rafi Chaudry and Travis Moore.  Hopheads at heart, Rafi and Travis have set out to focus on creating old styles of beers while putting their own marks and new spins on them.

Rafi, Travis and their operations partner Chad Troutwine, were kind enough to invite some of the KC Beer Blog contributors to drop by their brewery on New Year’s Eve to give us a tour of their facility and taste their flagship beers that you may have seen popping up around town the last week.

The first beer we sampled was their Alpha Pale which is a 5.6% ABV ‘hopped up’ pale ale.  Bursting with notes of citrus, pine and grapefruit, this pale ale has enough bitterness to please any hophead with the right amount of malt on the back end to keep it well balanced.

The next beer we tasted was a 6.5% ABV wheat stout brewed with coffee named House Brew.  Torn Label teamed up with local coffee roaster, Thou Mayest and used a Sumatran toddy of theirs to create this beer.  The aroma is very coffee forward while the taste has some hints of chocolate and light spices while letting the coffee shine.  This will quickly become a favorite for any coffee beer lovers.

The last beer we tried for the evening was Monk and Honey which is a 6.1% ABV Trappist Single brewed with honey.  The addition of honey combined with the Belgian yeast gives this beer a tea like quality that is both floral and a little sweet.

While talking with the Torn Label guys, they provided us with a little insight into some of the things to look forward to in the near future.  They have plans on opening a tasting room at their brewery that will be open on the weekends. You will be able to tour the brewery and enjoy a flight of Torn Label Brewing Co. beers while also being able to fill a growler or two of your favorite offerings.  They are also looking into canning their year-round beers while hand bottling some of their more limited releases in 22 oz bombers.  By the end of 2015, Torn Label Brewing Co. is expecting to have released close to 20 different beers throughout the year.

While 2015 and beyond look bright for Torn Label Brewing Co., their immediate attention is on their launch week and seeing their beers on tap at local Kansas City restaurants and bars.

The list of events for the week looks like this:

·       Monday 1/5 – Kick off Party at Bier Station
·       Tuesday 1/6 – 4 Course Beer Dinner at Local Pig in Westport and Happy Hour at The Foundry between 4:00pm-6:00pm
·       Wednesday 1/7 – Keep the Glass Night at Flying Saucer
·       Thursday 1/8 – Tap Takeover with a special one-off coffee variation of ‘House Brew’ at Thou Mayest
·       Friday 1/9 – Closing Night Party at Rock & Run Brewery

I want to give a big thank you to the Torn Label Brewing Co. team for taking time out of their busy schedules to show us around their brewery and letting us taste some of their delicious beers.  This is a wonderful accomplishment for these guys and something they have worked very hard to achieve.  Make sure you clear some time on your schedule this week to go out and support one of Kansas City’s newest craft breweries.
