Boulevard's collaboration with Sierra Nevada, Terra Incognita, will begin hitting store shelves around Kansas City tomorrow. The beer, which was originally brewed exclusively for the 2012 SAVOR Festival, was brought back to life by the two breweries for a 2013 release...with a few tweaks. This year's Terra Incognita is a blend of three variations of the beer: Terra Incognita aged in Templeton Rye barrels (30%, roughly), Terra Incognita aged in a 2,000-gallon foudre (45%, roughly), and fresh Terra Incognita dry-hopped with East Kent Golding hops (25%, roughly). And just prior to bottling, a dose of Brettanomyces was added to the beer before it was aged for over 3 months.
In addition to the release of the beer, you can watch and chat live with Sierra Nevada's Steve Dresler and Boulevard's Steven Pauwels on Wednesday from 1-1:30pm by going to terraincognitabeer.com.
Southern Tier invades KC
Okay, not a full blown invasion, but Lakewood, New York's Southern Tier Brewing Company will have two events within two days in Kansas City. Brewery rep Terry Sherman will be on hand for both. First, on Wednesday night at 6pm, you can head to Waldo Pizza where they'll have 2XIPA, 2XSteam, Plum Noir and Oak Aged Unearthly all on tap. Buy a beer and you can keep your pint glass or snifter. If you can't make it Wednesday, Bier Station will be hosting Terry and Southern Tier on Thursday at 5pm as they tap 2XSteam, Plum Noir, Compass, Live and 2XStout on nitro. Plus, just like Waldo Pizza, plenty of glassware and other brewery goodies will be available.
Overtime Sports Bar & Grill to open Friday
Though the opening of a south Johnson County sports bar might typically be of little consequence on this blog, Overtime Sports Bar & Grill may deserve an exception. The bar, which is opening in the rotating door of a spot that exists at 11300 W. 135th Street (a few doors down from Johnny's, has been Tymber, South Beach Cafe and most recently Paddy O Shay's), will feature 40+ taps and 100+ bottles on its menu. Though the picture I've seen online isn't entirely clear, I can verify some of the tap options they will have: 10 Boulevard, 4 Free State, 2 Schlafly, North Coast Scrimshaw Pilsner (that fin is hard to miss) and Odell Myrcenary. The others are difficult to make out, but that seems like a good start, and Overtime could prove to be a nice option for those that are out south in Kansas and can't always head to Missouri for their beer desires.
Boulevard makes Zymurgy rankings
The American Homebrewers Association released the results from their 2013 Zymurgy Magazine Best Beers in America survey, and Boulevard made the cut. Specifically, Tank 7 was voted the 32nd best beer in America (tied with New Belgium La Folie and Russian River Supplication), and in turn, the voting results also placed Boulevard as the 17th best brewery in the nation with the 9th best portfolio. As is the case with any ranked list, take the results with a grain of salt. But regardless of whether you agree with any of the specific lists (personally, while I like Tank 7, I think Saison-Brett deserves a spot), it's always nice seeing Boulevard get some recognition.
