Zwanze Day 2012 at The Foundry (updated with event details)

Cantillon is well-known in the beer community not only for their stellar, spontaneously fermented lambic beers, but also for the rarity and exclusivity of their products. Just the mention of the word 'Cantillon' sends excited chills up many beer nerds' spines, so to prepare yourself for the following news, I suggest you all sit down and grab a paper bag to breathe into before reading further.

Okay. Ready?

Cantillon just announced the bar locations that will be receiving their 2012 shipment of Zwanze for Zwanze Day, and Kansas City's own The Foundry was one of only 16 U.S. venues to be selected. The Foundry joins notable beer bars around the country like ChurchKey in Washington D.C., Monk's Cafe in Philadelphia and more. Worldwide, a total of 35 locations in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia will be participating in Zwanze Day on December 1st, 2012. You can see the full list of locations on the official Cantillion announcement.

So what IS Zwanze? Well, back in 2008, Cantillon experimented by soaking rhubarb in Lambic to create the original Zwanze. In years since, they've changed the beer a bit with each vintage (2009 was brewed with Elderflower, 2011 with Pineau d'Aunis wine), but for 2012, Cantillon decided to recreate the original rhubarb Lambic using organically grown rhubarb.

This is very exciting news for Kansas City, and of course, inevitably sparks the speculation that the Shelton Brothers distribution issues in Missouri are finally coming to a close. Rumors have been floating around lately that they are indeed getting sorted out, but since I don't have any official word on that, I'll just leave it at that..rumors.

So mark your calendar for Saturday, December 1 and stay tuned as we find out what exactly Zwanze Day at The Foundry will involve and if there will be anything else to look forward to that day. Cheers!
