Bridger's Bottle Shop to Open in Westport
A Bier Station style
bottle shop is planning on opening before St. Patrick's day on Westport Rd and
Mill St in the space where America's Pub used to reside. They plan to have more than 600 beers
available alongside a tradition menu featuring Local Pig meats - I might take
up permanent residence if that's truly the case. For more details you can checkout the Kansas City Star article.
Char Bar to Open Biergarten in the old Beaumont Club
Another addition to
Westport, this time brought to you by some of the same people responsible for
McCoy's / The Foundry / Beer Kitchen. Char Bar Smoked Meats & Amusements
plans to open this fall in the space that used to be The Beaumont Club - while heartbreaking
that it won't return as a music venue - the plans for this establishment seem
promising. There aren't a great number
of places in town where you can hang out outside and drink good beer - so more
are always welcome. They're planning on having games like croquet / ping-pong /
foosball available to play, and while I wish they would have a bocce court, any
games are good enough. You can read more about Char Bar on the Kansas City Starwebsite.
February 5th will
mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of William S. Burroughs: satirist,
painter, and controversial literary icon. To mark the occasion, Free State Brewing Company has crafted a bold and
eccentric ale befitting a figure as unique and unconventional as William S.
Burroughs. Burroughser Weisse takes an already
esoteric beer style and turns it on its head. Based on the Berliner Weisse
style known for a sour, tart finish that drinkers have historically tempered
with the addition of Raspberry or Woodruff syrup, Burroughser Weisse amps up the
tartness a bit with a bold addition of Hibiscus Flowers to the kettle,
resulting in a bright fuschia color in this crisp and refreshing ale.
This beer will be
released on February 5th at the brewpub and at a few places around Lawrence.
There is rumor that some might make it to Johnson County, so if you can't make
it out to Larryville, you may still have a chance to try this anniversary brew.
We'll let you know if we hear anything.
EDIT: This beer will be at the tap takeover happening at Overtime in Overland Park, on February 10th at 6:30pm before the KU vs. KSU basketball game. The brewers will also be there for a meet and greet.

Kansas Craft Brewers Expo
This year's KCBE is slated to be held March 8th in downtown Lawrence. The line-up look pretty good, and from what I've heard in years past, this is a very well run festival. Check out their website for a list of breweries as well as a link to tickets.
Next week brings us the beer that Pam in accounting
won't stop talking about, Boulevard's Chocolate Ale. Draft release is on
Monday, while bottles won't hit shelves until Tuesday. Come back tomorrow where
we'll talk about how to have a better chance at getting this highly anticipated release, as well as what to
do if you can't manage to find a bottle.
