BeerKC Summer Beer Festival

Though the first day of summer is technically not until June 20th, these recent weeks of warm temperatures have brought an early start to the season of sitting poolside, trips to the lake and nude sleeping with multiple tower fans pointed at you (that last one may just apply to me). This hot weather calls for certain types of beer; the days of stouts and porters are fewer and farther between, and now we look to lighter, more refreshing beer styles to quench our thirst.

Enter the first annual BeerKC Summer Beer Festival. This summer-themed festival, which benefits AIDS Walk Kansas City, is set to take place on Saturday, June 9th from 5-9 pm on Pennsylvania Ave. between McCoy's and Kelly's Westport Inn. The people behind BeerKC (Beer Kitchen, McCoy's and The Foundry) started the festival with the goal of offering a large number of easy-drinking, season-appropriate beers in one setting. Styles that will be part of the festival include Saison, Wit, Hefeweizen, Biere de Garde, Berliner Weisse, Radlers, Lagers, Pale Ale, Shandy, plus Spring and Summer seasonals.

Randyl Danner, Director of Beer for BeerKC, noted that there are many factors that go into selecting the participating breweries for a beer festival. For this particular event, she first focused on including local breweries, then expanded the process to find other popular craft breweries and breweries that have beers that fit well into the festival's style guidelines, like Stiegl and their Radler beers.

So, of course, the magic question is: what beers will be available for sampling? Here you go:
