VOTE for a Healthier KC!

As states and communities throughout the nation (including major suburban cities in the Kansas City area) continue to become smoke free, Kansas City is poised to follow suit on Tuesday, April 8.

Kansas City Question 3 is a citizens-driven, smoke free city ordinance that if approved by voters will require enclosed public places and workspaces, including restaurants and bars, to become smoke free June 30, 2008.

More than 6,000 registered voters in Kansas City signed petitions to place this issue on the ballot. It is supported by the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, Regional Health Alliance, Greater Kansas City Health Council, and other respected health and community organizations and leaders.

You Have the Right to Breathe Clean Air

There is no longer a question about the dangers of smoking and breathing secondhand smoke. It is unhealthy and it kills. This ordinance will protect everyone from the dangers of secondhand smoke, which contains more than 4,000 chemicals, including cancer-causing substances like formaldehyde, cyanide, carbon monoxide and arsenic.

This law will allow people with health problems like heart disease and asthma to work in a smoke free environment, and enjoy Kansas City’s restaurants and bars without putting their health at risk.

This ballot initiative is supported by doctors, nurses and other health care professionals who realize how dangerous it is to breathe secondhand smoke.
